How Word Study Should Build from 5th Through 8th Grade

What should word study actually look like as students move from fifth grade into middle school?

Fifth graders work with fewer word parts and vocabulary words while also balancing syllable and spelling instruction. In the upper grades, students work with more word parts and increasingly complex roots.

But the overall structure stays familiar: word-part charts, matching, prediction, context passages, application activities, and assessments.

That consistency reduces cognitive load because students already know how the routine works. Their attention can stay focused on learning increasingly challenging language.
