How to Make Middle School Grammar Instruction Actually Stick

You taught the grammar concept. Your students practiced it. They even seemed to understand it.

But can they actually use it in their writing?

In Part 2 of this grammar instruction series, Caitlin takes the three pillars introduced in the previous episode and shows you exactly what they can look like in your middle school ELA classroom.

We're digging into how to make direct instruction more interactive, how to use simple grammar games to reinforce learning, and how to intentionally move students from practicing a skill to applying it in their own writing.

Because the goal of grammar instruction isn't for students to ace a multiple-choice quiz. It's for them to become stronger, more effective communicators.

If you're ready to stop reteaching the same grammar skills and start helping students actually use what they learn, this episode is for you.

HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:

1. Make direct grammar instruction interactive, scaffolded, and relevant.

Direct instruction doesn't have to mean lecturing while students copy notes. Guided notes can keep students actively involved, while intentional scaffolding helps you build from foundational skills into grade-level standards without starting completely over each year. Connecting grammar to real-world communication also helps students understand why these skills matter beyond the classroom.

2. Use simple games to reinforce skills before moving on.

Grammar practice doesn't need to mean another worksheet. Simple games like Close the Gate and Tic-Tac-Toe give students repeated practice, immediate feedback, and a more engaging way to build confidence with a skill. They can also make differentiation easier because you can adjust the difficulty based on what individual students need.

3. Give students one specific grammar focus when they write.

The ultimate goal is application. Instead of asking students to correct every possible grammar issue in a writing assignment, give them one specific skill to focus on based on what you've recently taught. A simple application-to-writing checklist can help students intentionally find, correct, and use that grammar concept in their own work.
