Writing Engagement Starts Day One—Here’s How I Hook Them

If the thought of starting a writing unit on day one sounds a little ambitious, you are not alone.

Students are learning locker combinations.
They are finding their friends.
They are figuring out lunch and routines and where to sit.

So no, day one is probably not the moment to hand them a rubric and start explaining thesis statements or body paragraphs.

That is exactly why this episode matters.

In this episode, I share how to hook students with writing from the very beginning of the year without making it feel formal, heavy, or boring. The goal is not to start with structure. The goal is to start with curiosity.

That means giving students something engaging enough to make them think like writers before they even realize that is what they are doing.

If you want students to buy into writing early, this approach makes a huge difference.

HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:

1ļøāƒ£ Do not start with the rubric
Students need curiosity and confidence before they need formal writing language and structure.

2ļøāƒ£ Mystery and problem solving build writing skills fast
When students have to make claims, use evidence, and justify their thinking in an engaging context, they are doing real writing work.

3ļøāƒ£ Early buy-in makes formal writing easier later
If students first experience writing as thinking and problem solving, they are much more ready for essay structure when it comes.
