3 Must-Have Elements for Effective Middle School Grammar Instructio

You teach the grammar rule. Your students practice it. They might even ace the quiz. Then they sit down to write an essay...and suddenly it's like they never learned it.

Sound familiar?

In this episode of the Teaching Middle School ELA Podcast, Caitlin kicks off a two-part series on what actually makes grammar instruction stick. Instead of treating grammar as an isolated skill students learn once and quickly forget, she breaks down the three must-have elements of the EB Grammar framework: direct instruction, fun hands-on practice, and application to writing.

You'll learn why none of these pieces is enough on its own and how combining all three can help students move from simply knowing a grammar rule to actually using it in their writing.

If you're tired of reteaching the same grammar concepts year after year and wondering why they aren't transferring to student writing, this episode is for you.

HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:

1. Students still need direct grammar instruction.

Games, mentor sentences, and discovery activities can be valuable, but students first need a clear understanding of the grammar concept they're expected to use. Direct instruction gives them the foundational knowledge they need before moving into practice and application.

2. Hands-on practice helps grammar concepts stick.

Once students understand the concept, give them engaging opportunities to practice it. Games and hands-on activities can turn otherwise dry grammar skills into something students actually want to participate in while giving them the repetition they need to build confidence.

3. Grammar instruction has to transfer to student writing.

Knowing a grammar rule isn't the end goal. Students need intentional opportunities to apply one manageable grammar skill at a time to their own writing. The sequence matters: teach the concept, practice it, and then apply it. Continue revisiting those skills throughout the year instead of teaching them once and moving on.
